Chelmsford’s best days out are cheaper than people expect, and the most expensive one is not in the city at all. Below is what is actually worth doing in and around Chelmsford, with the 2026 prices and opening times taken from each venue’s own site this week, so you are not turning up to a closed gate or a tariff that changed in April.

What a day out actually costs

The cathedral has no car park of its own, so a city centre car park is the real cost of that one.

Hylands Estate: 574 acres, free, open every day

If you only do one thing in Chelmsford, do this one. Hylands Estate is 574 acres of Victorian gardens, parkland and ancient woodland on the south-west edge of the city, and admission is free. So are the formal gardens, The Stables and the artists’ studios.

Hylands Park is open every day of the year, gates from 7:30am. Closing time moves with the season: 9pm in August, 8pm in September, 7pm in October, 5pm from November through to January.

Parking is the only charge, and it applies between 9am and 6pm. From 1 April 2026 the council’s tariff is £2.25 for up to an hour or £3.40 until 6pm for Chelmsford residents, and £3.60 or £5.65 for everyone else (Chelmsford City Council parking order). If you go often, a resident season ticket is £83 for the year, seven days a week, which is the best-value thing in this article by a distance. Register through the council to get the resident rate; it is tied to your council tax account.

Hylands House itself opens free on Open Estate Days, 10am to 3pm, with a changing exhibition in the library, guided tours, a street food market on the lawn, live music in the Stables courtyard and the artists’ studios open. The remaining 2026 dates are 13 September, 11 October, 8 November and 13 December (Hylands Estate).

Also on site: an award-winning accessible adventure playground, a Go Ape high ropes course, and The Deli café in The Stables, open daily 8am to 5pm with hot food until 3.30pm.

Getting there: two entrances. CM2 8FS off Greenbury Way is the Hylands Park side, nearest the playground. CM2 8WQ off London Road is nearest the house and The Stables.

Museum of Chelmsford: £4, and children go free

The city museum sits in Oaklands Park, a short walk from Moulsham Street. It was renamed the Museum of Chelmsford, so if you are searching for “Chelmsford Museum” that is the same place.

Admission is £4 per adult. Children, young people and carers are free. There is a free car park on site with Blue Badge spaces, though the maximum stay is two hours.

Opening: 10am to 5pm daily April to October, last entry 4pm. 10am to 4pm daily November to March, last entry 3pm. Open on bank holidays; closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Inside are galleries on archaeology and local finds, social history and natural history, plus a live beehive that is the thing every child remembers. The current temporary shows are Timeless Treasures, built around the Great Baddow Coin Hoard, and the Roots Chelmsford Windrush Exhibition.

RHS Garden Hyde Hall: the big day out

Hyde Hall is at Rettendon, CM3 8ET, inside the Chelmsford district but a short drive south of the city. It is one of the Royal Horticultural Society’s own gardens and the most substantial paid attraction on this list.

Adult admission: £18.40 on the day. Booked online in advance it runs from £13.60 on winter weekdays through £15.70 off-peak to £17.20 at peak times, which in practice means weekends from April to September and weekdays in July and August. Children under 5 are free and 5 to 16 year olds are £6. RHS members go free and do not need to book.

Open daily 10am to 6pm, last entry 5pm, every day except Christmas Day.

The Dry Garden on the hilltop is what Hyde Hall is best known for, and it is the reason the garden holds up in an Essex August when a lot of gardens do not.

Essex Cricket: £18 for a full day’s play

Essex play at the ground on New Writtle Street, CM2 0PG, five minutes’ walk from the railway station. Note that it is now sponsored as the Ambassador Cruise Line Ground, not the Cloudfm County Ground, so signage and listings may not match older guides.

County Championship prices: £18 for adults booked in advance, £24 on the gate, £12 for young adults and students, £10 for juniors, with family tickets available. Gates open at 10am on all four days, and seating is unallocated for Championship matches (Essex Cricket).

Three ways in: the main entrance on New Writtle Street, the River Gate, and the 1876 Gate, which comes in through Century Tower from Meteor Way and is the one to use if you have arrived by train. Blast T20 nights are priced separately and sell out; the Championship is the value.

Chelmsford Cathedral: free, and older than it looks

Chelmsford Cathedral on New Street is free to enter and easy to walk past. The chancel dates from the first half of the fifteenth century and carries the arms of the families who paid for it, the Bourchiers and the de Veres.

What to look for: the sculpture of Christ in Glory by Peter Eugene Ball above the chancel arch; the nave ceiling, coloured and gilded in 1961; the patchwork hanging beneath the east window, made by Beryl Dean from 1,520 pieces; the memorial window to the US forces stationed in Essex between 1942 and 1945; and, outside, the two-metre copper dragon on the spire.

It has two organs, linked so they can be played together. The West End instrument, installed in 1994, was the first organ built from scratch for an English cathedral in more than forty years. Above the south porch is a library of medieval theological books and illuminated manuscripts, left to the church by Dr John Knightbridge, who died in 1677.

Lunchtime concerts run on Fridays in term time, and the exhibition Threads Through Creation opens on Friday 4 September 2026.

Riverside Leisure Centre: the ice rink

Riverside on Victoria Road, CM1 1FG, is the council’s flagship centre and the only place around here with an ice rink, complete with skate hire.

There is also a 25m ten-lane main pool with a changeable floor, a 10m learner pool with sensory elements, a splash zone and a flume, a 130-station gym, a six-court sports hall, soft play, a crèche taking children from six weeks, and two cafés.

Pool fun sessions are £7.30 on an ourChelmsford Lite card and £6.00 on Plus, with inflatable sessions at £8.30 and £7.00. Spectators pay £2.10 on Lite and nothing on Plus. Session prices change, so check the booking system before you travel.

Danbury Country Park: free, and the best walk in the district

Danbury Country Park is 45 acres of Grade II listed park and gardens on the ridge east of the city, run by Essex County Council and a Green Flag site. Entry is free, and it is open 8am to dusk.

Parking is charged: £3.15 for up to an hour, £4.40 for two, £5.50 for four and £6.55 all day. There are public toilets, including accessible ones, near the woods car park and at the mid lake, and the footpaths are well maintained with many of them hard surfaced.

Danbury sits at the top of the district’s price map as well as its geography: the CM3 4 postcode sector had a median sold price of £540,000 over the last year, well above the district median of £398,000.

Marsh Farm, South Woodham Ferrers

Marsh Farm on Marsh Farm Road, CM3 5WP, is the family day out at the far end of the district, on the Crouch. Animals, a Dinosaur Adventure included with admission, rides, indoor and outdoor play, and seasonal events through the school holidays.

One thing to know before you set off: Marsh Farm does not publish a flat day rate. Admission is priced by date through its booking system, and a Summer Pass runs from £4.95 to £29.00. Food and drink on site is card only. Book before you go, and check the opening hours on the day, because the farm itself warns that they change.

Chelmsford Theatre

Chelmsford Theatre on Fairfield Road, CM1 1JG, puts on over 300 events a year to about 150,000 people, backed by Arts Council England and the city council. Coming up:
