The 2026 date has not been announced. The last three switch-ons were all Sundays in November, 2024 was cancelled by Storm Bert, and 12,000 people came in 2025.
The Chelmsford Christmas Lights Switch-On has no announced 2026 date as at 5 September. The organiser, the city-centre business group Chelmsford For You, has a full page up for the 2025 event and nothing for this year. Its news section reads “coming soon”, and its festive landing page, CM1STMAS, is still carrying copy from 2023.
That is normal for the time of year rather than a warning sign. In 2025 the press release went out under the heading “the long-awaited return”, and the council was still promoting the event in the week it happened. What is worth knowing now is the shape of the day, because it barely changes, and the one year it did not happen at all.

Is it on this year?
Nothing suggests otherwise, and one thing points to it being on. Chelmsford For You is an active organisation running a full 2026 diary: the Chelmsford Cocktail Weekend on 2 to 4 October, a Bond Street tenth-birthday event on 26 September and the Concrete Canvas street-art festival are all on its site now. The switch-on is its biggest day of the year and it has never been dropped by choice.
The one year it did not happen was 2024, cancelled because of Storm Bert. That is the organiser’s own account: the 2025 release describes “the unfortunate cancellation of last year’s event due to Storm Bert” and says the 2024 Community Award winners were invited back to switch the lights on in 2025 instead, “ensuring they receive the celebration they deserve”. So if you remember turning up to nothing, you did not imagine it.
The date to expect
Every switch-on we can date has fallen on a Sunday in the second half of November:
- 2022: Sunday 20 November
- 2023: Sunday 19 November
- 2024: cancelled
- 2025: Sunday 16 November
The equivalent Sundays in 2026 are 15 and 22 November. We are not going to print either as the date, because Chelmsford For You has not published one. It is a pattern worth planning around, not a booking.
The shape of the day
From the organiser’s 2025 release, which is the most detailed published account of the event:
- The city centre runs from 10am to 5pm, free, with Christmas markets, live music, street food, mulled wine and walkabout performers.
- The lights come on at 5pm, followed straight away by fireworks.
- A main stage carries live music, dance acts, prize giveaways and the Community Awards. In 2025 it was co-hosted with BBC Essex, marking Chelmsford’s claim as the birthplace of radio.
- Satellite bits spread across the centre: a Christmas Tree Stage from 12pm hosted by Hot Box; the Grinch loose from 12pm; Santa and his sleigh in Half Moon Square from 10am, raising money for the Salvation Army; 24 market stalls at The Meadows from 10am; a makers’ market at Patch from 11am; and Grays Yard with a marshmallow firepit, mulled wine and a snow machine from 12pm.
Chelmsford For You says 12,000 people came to the 2025 switch-on.
Where the fireworks go up from
This changed in 2025 and is the single most useful thing on this page if you are picking a spot.
Because of works at The Meadows, the 2025 display was launched from the High Chelmer multi-storey car park rather than its usual position. The organisers said the new launch point would “ensure the fireworks can still be safely enjoyed by everyone across the city centre”. Whether it moves back for 2026 has not been said. It is a short, high-up display rather than a park show, so anywhere in the High Street and Tindal Square end of the centre works.
The Christmas Cabins
The wooden trading cabins are a separate thing from the switch-on and they have their own dates.
- 2024: the first year, 17 cabins.
- 2025: 16 cabins in Tindal Square, outside Shire Hall, with street food, local makers, wreaths, artwork, beer gift sets, chocolates, mulled wine and weekend entertainment including the Chelmsford Silver Band.
Two of Chelmsford For You’s own pages give different 2025 dates for the same thing, so treat both with care. The trader application page says the cabins ran “Friday 28 November to Tuesday 23 December”, open daily from 10am. The Christmas in the City page says they launched “Saturday 29 November and running right through to Monday 22 December”. Nothing has been published for 2026, and the 2025 trader applications closed on 31 July, so if the cabins are returning the traders already know.
Elsewhere in the district
The city switch-on is not the only one. From the council’s 2025 festive round-up:
- South Woodham Ferrers Christmas Fayre, town centre, with the lights switched on at 4.30pm.
- Galleywood lights switch-on by Santa at the village shops on Watchouse Road, with carols and Hospital Radio.
- Danbury Christmas Fayre at Danbury Leisure Centre, free entry and free parking, with a grotto run by Danbury and Villages Rotary.
- Stock Christmas Fayre on Stock Common.
- Little Waltham Christmas celebration in Taylor’s Park.
None of these has published 2026 dates yet either. Parish councils tend to confirm in October.
Getting in and parking
The switch-on is a walk-in event in a pedestrianised centre, so the question is where to leave the car.
