Chelmsford's seven containers and which week each goes out. Garden waste is £62 a year, large items £31, and no collection round in the city runs on a Monday.

Chelmsford gives every house seven separate containers, and only one of them is emptied every week. The rest run on a two-week cycle in which the black bin and the green box go out together one week, and the brown bin, the paper sack and the plastics sack go out the next. Get the week wrong and nothing is taken, because the crews only collect what is scheduled for that round.

This page sets out which container takes what, which week it goes out, what the paid extras cost this year, and the two things about Chelmsford’s system that catch people out: there is no Monday collection round anywhere in the city, and the sacks and liners you need are issued once a year in September.

The seven containers, and which week

Chelmsford City Council’s Recycling and Waste Collection Policy sets out the container for each material and how often it is emptied. The alternating pattern comes from the council’s own collection calendars.

Two things sit outside that table. Small electrical items no bigger than the green box, and clean clothes and paired shoes, both go out in a separate plastic bag placed on or next to the green box, so both are week A. The council will only take clothing that can be worn again and shoes that are still in a pair (green recycling box).

Note that brown paper goes in the cardboard sack, not the paper sack, which is the single most common mix-up between the two white sacks (what goes in each bin).

If you have seven or more permanent residents you can ask for a 240 litre black bin instead of the standard 180, and households with limited access can ask for a 120 litre one.

Finding your day, and why no one in Chelmsford has a Monday collection

There are eight rounds: Tuesday A, Tuesday B, Wednesday A, Wednesday B, Thursday A, Thursday B, Friday A and Friday B. Put your postcode into the council’s check your collection day lookup and it returns your round and its calendar. The council also runs a reminder app, Loci. The council said on 11 September 2026 that it is not issuing a printed recycling calendar while it redraws the rounds, and that around 7,500 properties may change collection day or week in early 2027. The rounds run Tuesday to Friday only. No round in Chelmsford falls on a Monday, which means the usual English bank holiday shuffle, where a Monday holiday pushes the whole week back a day, does not arise here.

Everything must be at your property boundary by 7am (putting your bins out).

Bank holidays and Christmas

The council’s policy is narrower than most people assume. Paragraph 7.1 provides catch-up arrangements for one period only:

Where collections are disrupted due to the incidence of bank holidays over the Christmas / New Year period the Council will put in place catch-up arrangements, with any necessary collections usually taking place on the following Saturday/s.

Over the 2025/26 festive period that meant no collections on Thursday 25 December, Friday 26 December or Thursday 1 January, with three weekend catch-up collections instead and a knock-on effect on other days (Chelmsford City Life). Real Christmas trees can go in the brown bin, cut into manageable chunks, if you have a garden waste subscription.

One gap worth knowing: Good Friday is the only bank holiday that lands on a Chelmsford collection day, and the published policy does not say what happens to the Friday A and Friday B rounds when it falls. It only commits to catch-ups over Christmas and New Year. If you are on a Friday round, check your round’s calendar on the council’s website before Easter rather than assuming.

In severe weather, the policy is different again and less forgiving: collections suspended for snow, ice or flooding are picked up on your next scheduled collection day, and there is no catch-up.

Garden waste: £62 a year, and the year starts in March

Garden waste has been a paid subscription since March 2025. The prices, from the council’s costs, discounts and what is included page:

The detail that costs people money: the subscription year runs 1 March to 28 February, and you pay the full annual fee whenever you join. There is no pro rata rate for signing up in September, no refund, and it does not transfer if you move. The single person discount does not qualify you for the reduced rate; it has to be Council Tax benefit.

The council aims for 26 collections a year and guarantees a minimum of 20. Bins are 240 litres, the lid has to close, and garden waste left beside the bin is not taken.

Large items: £31 for the first, £13.60 after

The council’s large item collection service charges £31 for the first item and £13.60 for each additional item, and those prices hold until 31 December 2026. A corner sofa counts as two items.

Book eight or more items, or a shed, greenhouse, Aga or trampoline, and you have to speak to the council first for an estimate. Items must be dismantled, disconnected from the mains and out before 7am. Fees are not refundable and you cannot add or change items after booking. Flats cannot book online and have to call 01245 615800.

Missed collections: you have one day

This is the tightest window of any service on this page. Report a missed collection the day after your collection day, no later. If you are on a Friday round you have until the end of business on Monday. The council aims to return by the end of the following day (missed collections).

It will not count as a missed collection if you put the bin out after 7am, used the wrong container, overfilled it so the lid will not shut, left black sacks beside the bin, refilled it after the round had been, or have no valid garden waste subscription. Leave the bin out at your normal collection point for the return visit.

Extra recycling is allowed, within limits: extra plastics and paper in separate clear bags on your normal day, and extra cardboard flat-packed next to the card sack, not in a plastic bag.

The September delivery most people forget

Two of Chelmsford’s containers are consumable, and the council issues a year’s supply once annually, usually around September: one roll of 52 clear plastics sacks, and one roll of 130 food waste liners. That is the schedule set out in the waste policy. If you run out mid-year, or you moved in after the delivery, you order more through order a new bin, box or sack rather than waiting for the next round of deliveries.

Fifty-two sacks is one a week, so a household putting out more than one clear sack a fortnight will run short before the year is out.

The recycling centre is Essex County Council’s, and you have to book

Chelmsford Recycling Centre is on Drovers Way, CM2 5PH. It is run by Essex County Council rather than the city council, which is why it is not on the city council’s bins pages.

  • 1 March to 15 October: 9am to 5pm, every day
  • 16 October to end of February: 9am to 4pm, every day
  • Closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day; closes at 1pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve

You need to book a slot to arrive by car, van, pick-up or large trailer. Booking is free but is needed for every visit, and there are separate booking routes for cars and for vans, pick-ups or large trailers. You do not need a booking if you hold a Blue Badge, or if you arrive on foot or by bike (Love Essex).
