Chelmsford to London trains: 29 minutes, £5,204 a year

Chelmsford sits on the Great Eastern Main Line, and the train is the main reason a lot of people live here rather than further in. It is also, for most commuters, the second largest bill after the mortgage. This page sets out what the journey actually takes, what every ticket costs in 2026, when the first and last trains run, and what the new station at Beaulieu Park did and did not change.

The quick version

One operator, Greater Anglia, one terminal, London Liverpool Street. No changes, no choice of route to weigh up. The district now has two stations on the line: Chelmsford, on the viaduct in the middle of the city, and Beaulieu Park, which opened on the north-east edge in October 2025.

The headline for anyone choosing between them: Beaulieu Park is further out, slower and dearer. It exists to serve the new housing on that side of the city and to give drivers 752 parking spaces without going into the centre, not to beat Chelmsford on time or price.

How long the journey takes

Times below are from the published timetable for a Monday.

The fastest train of the day does it in 29 minutes. The 10:48 reaches Liverpool Street at 11:17, and the 23:30 back the other way runs in the same 29. Those are the express paths that skip most of the Essex stops.

Off-peak, expect 33 to 36 minutes. The five departures between 09:55 and 10:48 took 38, 33, 36, 33 and 29 minutes. Two of the five were the fast ones. It is worth reading the actual departure rather than assuming an average, because on this line the difference between the fastest and the slowest train in the same hour is nine minutes.

In the morning peak, expect 36 to 40 minutes. The 07:00, 07:05, 07:13, 07:22 and 07:33 arrived in 39, 36, 37, 40 and 38 minutes respectively. Peak trains are slower than off-peak ones here, which surprises people: they carry more stops and they queue for platforms at the London end.

From Beaulieu Park, add roughly ten minutes. The 08:11, 08:20, 08:39 and 08:57 took 43, 42, 43 and 47 minutes.

How often trains run

Five departures for Liverpool Street left Chelmsford between 07:00 and 07:33, and five more between 09:55 and 10:48. In practice that is a train roughly every seven minutes in the peak and every ten to twelve minutes through the middle of the day. You do not need to plan around a timetable for a routine journey into London; you need to plan around it only if you want a fast one.

First and last trains

• First train from Chelmsford: 05:11, into Liverpool Street at 05:51.
• Last train from Liverpool Street: 00:18, into Chelmsford at 00:59. The one before it is the 23:48, arriving 00:21.

That 00:18 is the number worth remembering. It is late enough that a normal evening in town does not need a taxi home, which is not true of every commuter town on this side of London. Weekend engineering work moves it, so check on the day if the evening matters.

What tickets cost in 2026

Contactless now works here. Greater Anglia switched pay as you go on at Chelmsford and Beaulieu Park, along with 18 other Essex and Hertfordshire stations, on Sunday 8 March 2026. You touch in and out with a card or phone and the fare is worked out for you, with daily and weekly caps on journeys into and within London (RailBusinessDaily). For an occasional traveller that removes the main way people overpay on this line, which is buying a single at the machine and then buying another one on the way home.

Season tickets

The Travelcard version costs £1,368 a year more and buys you every bus and Tube journey inside Zones 1 to 6. If your office is more than a walk from Liverpool Street, do that sum before you assume the cheaper season is the cheaper option.

Regulated fares are frozen this year. For the first time in about three decades, standard class Anytime, Off-Peak and season fares in England did not go up in the March round. The freeze took effect the week beginning 2 March 2026 and runs until March 2027 (National Rail). Fares would otherwise have risen 5.8%, which on a Chelmsford annual season would have been about £300. Advance, First Class and promotional fares are not regulated and can still move.

Which ticket is actually cheapest for you

The chart below converts every option to the same unit: what it costs per day you actually travel, on a five-day commute.

What that means in practice. If you commute five days a week in the peak, buy the annual season: it saves £3,308 a year against anytime day returns. If you go in three days a week, or you travel after the morning peak, the annual season stops making sense and off-peak day returns or contactless with its caps will beat it. The awkward middle is four days a week, where the two are close enough that the season’s convenience is the deciding factor rather than the money.

Beaulieu Park: what the new station changed

Beaulieu Park opened to passengers on 26 October 2025, the first station built on the Great Eastern Main Line in over a century. It cost £175 million and was funded by Homes England, Essex County Council, Chelmsford City Council, the South East Local Enterprise Partnership and the developers Countryside and L&Q (Network Rail).

It has 752 parking spaces across two car parks, 38 free Blue Badge bays, 500 free covered cycle spaces, step-free access to all platforms by lift, and a bus interchange.

The honest read for existing Chelmsford commuters: it does not speed you up. It takes ten minutes longer into Liverpool Street and the anytime single is £2.30 dearer. What it does is take a large volume of park-and-ride traffic off the roads into the city centre, which matters given the state of the roads around the Army and Navy, and it gives the new housing on the north-east edge a station within walking distance. If you live in Springfield, Beaulieu or Boreham and currently drive to Chelmsford station, it is worth pricing both.
