Dates and prices are confirmed and tickets are on sale. Entry is the Writtle gate off Greenbury Way, not Hylands House, and the last slot is 8pm.

Enlightened, the winter light trail at Hylands, is confirmed for 2026 and on sale. It runs from Friday 27 November 2026 to Saturday 2 January 2027, with the first entry slot at 4.30pm and the last at 8pm.

This is the one big Chelmsford festive event with everything already published: dates, times, prices and the entrance. The thing most people get wrong is the entrance, so that comes first.

The entrance is not Hylands House

Entry to the trail is the Writtle entrance off Greenbury Way, on the A414, CM2 8FS. The organiser’s own instruction is to follow signs for Hylands Park, not Hylands House, and it states plainly that there is no access to the event from the London Road entrance.

That matters because London Road is the entrance most people use for Hylands the rest of the year, and a satnav pointed at “Hylands House” will take you to the wrong gate on a dark December evening.

The “from” prices are real rather than a teaser: tickets are sold in Off Peak and Peak bands, so the £12 adult and £8.50 child figures apply to the quieter dates and slots, and the busy ones cost more. Weekends in December are the peak band on every trail of this kind, so if price matters more than convenience, look at the weekday slots in late November and the first days of January.

Infants under 3 go free but the booking system still expects them to be included in the party.

Tickets, changes and refunds

Enlightened’s refund terms are stricter than most family events and worth reading before you book.

  • Orders can be cancelled and refunded only inside a 24-hour cooling-off period from the time of booking. After that they are non-refundable unless the organiser cancels the event.
  • Up to 14 days before the event, an order can be exchanged for a voucher or credit, valid for 24 months across any Enlightened Moments event.
  • The policy applies to whole orders. Individual tickets within a booking cannot be exchanged or refunded.
  • A Flexible upgrade at £2 per ticket, taken at the time of booking, moves that 14-day window to 24 hours before the event and removes the £1.50 per ticket change fee, with unlimited changes.

Tickets went on general sale on 31 March 2026, so the popular December Saturdays have had five months of selling. Availability is shown per date and per 15-minute slot on the booking calendar.

Who to ask if something goes wrong

Hylands Estate is the venue, not the organiser, and it says so in terms. The estate’s own listing states the event “is not managed by Hylands Estate and the estate team will be unable to assist you with your enquiries”. Everything, from tickets to access, goes to Enlightened Moments, at hylands@enlightenedmoments.co.uk.

That is a useful thing to know before you ring the estate on the night.

The rest of the producer’s Hylands season

The company behind Enlightened, The Colour Project and Aerial Artworks, has added two events to Hylands for 2026, announced by the city council in May.

  • A Curious Adventure: The Alice in Wonderland Drone Spectacular, over 500 illuminated drones, ran on 4 and 5 September 2026, entry from 7pm with the show at 8.30pm.
  • Hylands Fear Fest, running nightly from Friday 16 October to Sunday 1 November 2026, in two versions: a Spooky Trail for families and children aged 7 and over, ending at a fairground, and Fear Fest Extreme, a woodland scare trail with live actors for ages 15 and over. Tickets went on sale from 1 June.

Both are separately ticketed and neither is part of an Enlightened booking.

Getting there and parking

The trail is a walk of about an hour around Hylands Park in the dark, on grass and estate paths, so it is boots and layers rather than shoes. Parking is at the Writtle entrance off Greenbury Way, and the A414 approach backs up on peak December evenings when several thousand people arrive across a narrow band of 15-minute slots.

  • Sold-out dates, once the December weekends start closing. We will note which bands have gone.
  • Peak band prices, which the organiser publishes per date rather than as a single figure.
  • Any change to the entrance arrangements, which the organiser has repeated in bold every year because people still turn up at London Road.
